WRESTLING fans at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Kuala Lumpur left the stadium elated after witnessing the return of World Wrestling Federation (WWE) live on Malaysian soil.

It has been 12 long years since we witnessed the likes of Chris Jericho, The Rock, Big Show, Kane and Lita in action here.

The event, organised by Astro and Malaysia Major Events, met with overwhelming response from wrestling fans who were thrilled to see WWE Superstars such as John Cena, Sheamus, Seth Rollins, Big Show, Bray Wyatt and The Miz as well as Divas AJ Lee and Paige in action.

Getting to see their favourite superstars perform live was a dream come true for many die-hard fans, which saw more than 10,000 in attendance for the first night of the two-day event.

During exclusive interviews with StarMetro, Cena and The Miz shared that they were both counting on the fans to drive up the excitement and react to what was happening in the ring.

The fans did not disappoint.

Many gathered at the entrance of the stadium from as early as 5pm just to soak up the atmosphere with like-minded fans.

Some of them were comparing their costumes and replica championship belts while others checked out the souvenir shop which was crowded with both young and old wrestling fans.

Attendees came from around the country and region with many of them attending their first live wrestling match, having missed the opportunity 12 years ago or not having the independence to be there on their own accord.

Ahmad Dahlan, 22, remembers when his older brother was allowed to watch the show but he was not allowed to go because he was still in primary school.

“My parents did not allow me to go with my brother because they were worried about my safety and in case I picked up negative influences from the show.

“I am so glad WWE returned to Malaysia and I managed catch it this time. It is definitely the best moment of the year for me so far,” he shared.

Renowned Malaysian bodybuilder Sazali Samad, a fan of professional wrestling since the Hulk Hogan era of the 1980s, was also among the attendees.

“After all these years of watching wrestling on television, I am very happy to be here watching these guys perform live,” he said.

Even before the matches started, fans in the arena were calling out ‘Let’s go!’ for the show to begin and live-tweeting about how excited they were.

The crowd settled quickly when the first fight began with Kofi Kingston and Big E taking on The Wyatt Family’s Luke Harper and Erik Rowan. They went wild when Kingston and Big E sent the brothers off with an outstanding aerial finish.

The fans in the stadium proved how passionate they were with their laughter, cheers and boos — part of what being at a live wrestling event is all about — amid aerial moves, taunting and smack-talking. One unforgettable moment was when the referee got knocked out cold midway of a match.

After each match, fans would dash to the barricades separating them from the wrestlers for a chance to get up close and personal with the superstars, who obligingly shook their hands and posed for photographs.

The WWE Superstars’ performances and world-class level of production kept the crowd delighted throughout the night but it did feel like it ended too soon for the die-hard fans.
